DETIK.COM - Kofi Annan, former UN Secretary-General (Secretary General) who won the Nobel Peace Prize for humanitarian work, has died at the age of 80. He died on Saturday (08/18/2018).
"He died peacefully on Saturday after a brief illness," the Kofi Annan Foundation said in a statement.Annan is the first African black to take on the role of the world's top diplomat. He became Secretary General of the United Nations from 1997 to 2006.
He then served as the UN special envoy for Syria, which led the effort to find a peaceful solution to the conflict in the country of Bashar al-Assad.
In a statement, Kofi Annan Foundations briefly described the figure of the former UN Secretary-General. "(He) global statesman and internationalist who is very committed to fighting all his life for a more just and more peaceful world," said the foundation.
"Where there is suffering or need, he reaches out and touches many people with deep compassion and empathy. He selflessly puts others first, radiates true kindness, warmth and brilliance in everything he does," added the foundation's statement this, as quoted by the BBC.
Annan's tenure as Secretary General of the United Nations coincided with the Iraq War and the HIV / AIDS pandemic.
Ghana Mourning for a week
Ghana is very saddened by the death of Kofi Annan who is considered to be very proud of his homeland. Ghana's president, Nana Akufo-Addo, set a week of national mourning to pay homage to Annan.
In his statement, as reported by AFP and Reuters on Saturday (08/18/2018), President Akufo-Addo praised the late Annan as a perfect international diplomat. He also called Annan 'one of the greatest countrymen'.
In his instructions, President Akufo-Addo set a period of national mourning for one week, starting on Monday (8/20).
He also ordered that half-mast flags be flown throughout the territory of Ghana and that all of Ghana's diplomatic missions during the mourning period were put into effect.
"The perfect international diplomat and formerly respected Secretary General of the United Nations (UN Secretary-General), Mr. Kofi Annan is the first of sub-Saharan Africans to occupy this noble position," President Akufo-Addo said in a statement.
"He brought great fame to our country with this position and through its actions and behavior in the global arena," he added.
"He is someone who strongly believes in the capacity of the citizens of Ghana to make their own way in the path of progress and prosperity," said Akufo-Addo President.
The Annan Foundation, Kofi Annan Foundation, previously announced Annan died at the age of 80 while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Bern, Switzerland, on Saturday (8/18) morning local time. He is called suffering from sudden illness. It was known that after retirement, Annan lived in a village on the outskirts of Switzerland with his family. He left a wife named Nane and three children.
Annan, who was born in Kumasi, Ghana on April 8, 1938, studied at Ghana and Macalester College in St Paul, Minnesota, United States (US). He joined the United Nations in 1962 as a lower level employee at the World Health Organization in Geneva, Switzerland.
At that time, Annan thought he had only briefly worked at the UN, but apparently spent almost his entire life serving the world peace agency. Annan served as the 7th UN Secretary General for two periods, from 1997-2006.

The statement was delivered by Retno through her Instagram account (retno_marsudi). He said Kofi Annan would always be remembered even though it was gone.
