Help My Family Keep Our Home
Hello
friends,
I rarely
write something so personal, but today I feel I must share our story. My name
is Asep Haryono, and I live with my wife and two children in Pontianak,
West Kalimantan, Indonesia.
For the past
20 years, since 2005, we have been living in a small rented house. It’s
nothing luxurious, but it has been our home. It has four bedrooms, a
garage, and is surrounded by kind neighbors who already feel like family. We
don’t own a car just motorbikes but the house has been perfect for our simple
life.
Why This House Means So Much to Us
This house
is more than just walls and a roof. It’s where my children grew up, where they
studied, and where our family shared so many memories together. The location is
also ideal close to my work and to the kids’ schools.
We always
felt safe here, and for that reason, we never moved. Every year, we extended
the rental contract without any problems.
The Problem We Face
This December
2025 marks our 21st year living here. But now, we face a very difficult
challenge.
The owners
of the house have decided not to extend the rental because they want to
sell it. After some discussions, they said they might allow us to stay
until October 2026 but only if we agree to pay double the usual rent.
- Normal yearly rent: IDR
7,000,000 (around USD 437)
- New proposed rent: IDR
14,000,000 (around USD 855)
We had
already prepared the money for the usual rent, but this sudden increase is far
beyond what we can afford. My part-time income cannot cover it, and the only
option I could think of was selling our motorbike. That would leave us
depending on public transportation, which is not easy.
