Pontianak, the capital of West Kalimantan, is a lively city that sits right on the equator line. And yes exactly at zero degrees latitude! The city was founded on October 23, 1771, by Syarif Abdurrahman Alkadrie, who later became the first Sultan of Pontianak. What started as a small riverside settlement has now grown into a colorful, modern city that still keeps its strong cultural roots alive.
People often call it the “City on the Equator” because of its famous landmark, the Equator Monument, where you can experience a cool natural event called the “Culmination Point.” During this moment, your shadow completely disappears as the sun stands directly overhead an experience you can’t find just anywhere in the world!
Now in 2025, Pontianak celebrates its 254th birthday with pride and joy. The city comes alive with parades, art performances, music shows, food bazaars, and bright night festivals along the Kapuas River. It’s a perfect time to see how Pontianak beautifully blends its history, traditions, and modern lifestyle.
So, before we jump into the photos, take a moment to feel the spirit of Pontianak City a place where the past meets the present, and where every smile feels like home. All photos here are from my creations.

One
of the participants in action during the two-day Colorful Fashion
Road Festival held by Pontianak Post daily
newspaper and the Pontianak City Government (Pemkot Pontianak)
to commemorate the 245th anniversary of Pontianak.
Unlike the Fashion
Road Festival in Jember, which is internationally recognized,
the one in Pontianak is a bit different. The theme of this year’s event, “Flora
and Fauna,” was attended by representatives from several senior
high schools across Pontianak.
