Why the U.S. Supports Israel So Strongly

Last Update : September 8th,2025: 09:52 AM

The relationship between the United States and Israel is one of the most talked-about alliances in modern history. For decades, Washington has stood firmly behind Tel Aviv from providing billions of dollars in military aid to defending Israel on the global stage, even when it draws widespread criticism for its policies toward Palestinians and the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

So, why does the U.S. support Israel so strongly? The answer isn’t simple. It’s not about one reason, but rather a web of history, strategy, politics, and even religion that keeps this bond so resilient. Let’s break it down.

Shaking hands behind the flag of the US and Isrsel

|1. Historical and Moral Ties

Much of U.S. support for Israel can be traced back to the aftermath of World War II. The Holocaust left a deep scar on the global conscience, and sympathy for the Jewish people was widespread. When Israel was established in 1948, the United States was among the very first countries to recognize it.

For many Americans, Israel was seen as a nation born out of tragedy and resilience a homeland for a people who had suffered centuries of persecution. This created a sense of moral responsibility. Even today, many U.S. politicians and citizens view defending Israel as not only a matter of policy but of principle.

2. Strategic Partnership in the Middle East
Beyond history, there’s a very practical reason for the alliance: strategy. The Middle East has always been one of the world’s most volatile regions, plagued by wars, instability, and anti-Western sentiment. For Washington, having a reliable partner in this region is invaluable.

Israel plays that role. It provides intelligence sharing, advanced military cooperation, and technological innovation that directly benefits U.S. national security. During the Cold War, Israel acted as a counterbalance to Soviet influence in the Middle East. Today, it helps the U.S. counter Iran’s ambitions, combat terrorism, and keep a foothold in one of the most critical regions on the planet.

Put simply: Israel is America’s most dependable ally in a tough neighborhood.

3. Military and Economic Ties
Another key factor is money specifically, military aid. Every year, the United States provides more than $3 billion in military assistance to Israel, making it the single largest recipient of American foreign aid.

This isn’t just generosity. Much of that funding is spent on American-made weapons and systems, which supports U.S. defense industries and jobs back home. Projects like the Iron Dome missile defense system are joint ventures, meaning both countries benefit technologically and militarily.

So while Israel gets the weapons and security, the U.S. gets innovation, strategic advantages, and economic benefits.

4. Political Influence and Lobbying
Inside the United States, the pro-Israel lobby plays a massive role in shaping policy. Organizations like AIPAC (American Israel Public Affairs Committee) have enormous influence in Washington, ensuring that both Republicans and Democrats remain strongly supportive of Israel.

It’s not just lobbying, though. Evangelical Christian groups a powerful voting bloc in U.S. politics also strongly support Israel. For many evangelicals, the modern state of Israel is tied to biblical prophecy, and defending it becomes a matter of faith.

All of this creates an environment where criticizing Israeli policies can be politically risky. Lawmakers know that supporting Israel is not only popular among donors but also among certain groups of voters, which makes the alliance very hard to shake.

5. Shared Values and Media Narratives
On top of history, strategy, and politics, there’s also the story of shared values. Both the U.S. and Israel describe themselves as democracies built on principles like freedom, innovation, and the rule of law. This narrative of “two democracies standing together” is powerful, even if critics argue that it doesn’t always match the reality particularly when it comes to Palestinian rights.

Western media often portrays Israel as a small nation under constant threat from hostile neighbors. This reinforces American sympathy, since U.S. citizens can easily identify with the idea of a democracy fighting for survival.

6. Cultural and Religious Connections
There are also deep cultural and religious ties. The U.S. is home to a large Jewish-American community that maintains close personal, cultural, and political links to Israel. Evangelical Christians, as mentioned earlier, add another layer of support based on religious conviction.

This blend of faith, identity, and politics keeps Israel close to the American heart in a way that goes beyond cold strategic calculations.

7. The Critics’ View
Of course, not everyone agrees with this strong support. Critics argue that unconditional backing for Israel allows it to continue policies that worsen the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. They point to human rights abuses, settlement expansion, and the suffering in Gaza as issues that the U.S. could pressure Israel to address but often doesn’t.

Others say U.S. foreign policy should be more balanced, engaging with both Israel and Palestine to promote peace rather than taking one side so firmly. This debate is especially strong among younger Americans and progressive groups, who are increasingly critical of Israeli policies.

Conclusion

The U.S.and Israel relationship is one of the closest alliances in the world. It’s built on history, strategy, money, politics, shared values, and even religion. For Washington, Israel isn’t just another partner it’s a crucial ally in a complicated region, a symbol of shared ideals, and a politically safe relationship at home.

But this support comes at a cost: growing criticism internationally, frustration among Palestinians, and increasing divisions within the U.S. itself.

So the real question is this:
Should U.S. foreign policy remain so firmly tied to Israel, or should it aim for a more balanced approach that also addresses Palestinian concerns?

“Very well written. “Critics argue that unconditional backing for Israel allows it to continue policies that worsen the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. They point to human rights abuses, settlement expansion, and the suffering in Gaza as issues that the U.S. could pressure Israel to address but often doesn’t.” —> this point cannot be overstated because it has been missed by our government.
They seem to all mean well but are not doing right by Israel in not confronting the behaviors that predictably engender rage in their Palestinian neighbors, as they would in anyone (i.e., willful violations / disrespect of basic human rights, with no legal recourse and growing desperation to be able to live a normal life as Israel gains more power on the world stage).
This is why a 2-state solution needs to be forced now, for Israel’s sake as well. Israel was definitely drawn into a well-laid trap in Gaza by an opponent who knew Israelis better than they know themselves. And Israel’s gov’t / military was warned in Oct 2023 to not fall into this trap, but they did not listen. Let’s hope they listen now re: the new US ceasefire proposal, which Pres. Trump wisely recruited a former successful Israeli negotiation expert to facilitate this time.
