How to Improve Google Indexing for Your Blog: Simple Tips That Work

If you’ve been blogging for a while, you’ve probably noticed something strange in your Google Search Console (GSC). Maybe only a handful of your posts are indexed, while many others are sitting under the “Not Indexed” category. Don’t worry you’re not alone! Indexing takes time, and it doesn’t always happen automatically.

The good news? There are practical steps you can take to improve your chances of getting more of your posts indexed. When your content is indexed properly, it has the opportunity to show up in search results, which means more visibility and traffic.

Let’s go through some simple but effective ways to help Google index your blog faster.

1. Request Indexing Manually

One of the quickest ways to get Google’s attention is to request indexing directly in Google Search Console.

Here’s how:

1.   Copy the URL of an important blog post.

2.   Paste it into the URL Inspection Tool in GSC.

3.   Hit Request Indexing.

That’s it! Google will add your page to its queue and usually check it within a few hours to a few days. This method works best for new posts or updated content you want Google to notice right away.

2. Improve Internal Linking

Internal links are like road signs for Google’s crawlers. If your blog posts are well-connected, it’s easier for search engines to discover and index more pages.

For example:

  • When you write about “blog security tips,” link to your older post about “how to remove harmful links.”
  • If you publish a travel story, link to related travel guides you’ve written before.

Not only does this help Google crawl deeper into your site, but it also keeps your readers engaged longer. Win-win!

3. Update and Optimize Content

Google loves fresh, useful, and detailed content. If some of your older posts aren’t getting indexed, try updating them with:

  • More words: Aim for at least 600+ words per post. Longer posts tend to perform better.
  • Headings: Break your article into H2 and H3 sections for easier scanning.
  • Images: Add relevant pictures with descriptive alt text (e.g., “blogger sitemap submission screenshot”).
  • Keywords: Sprinkle in relevant keywords naturally without overstuffing.

Think of it this way: if your post genuinely helps the reader and looks professional, Google will want to show it off.

4. Share Posts Externally

Don’t just hit “publish” and wait for magic to happen. Promote your blog posts on platforms like:

  • Facebook groups and pages
  • X (Twitter) with relevant hashtags
  • LinkedIn if your content is professional or educational
  • Pinterest, which works great for tutorials, tips, and lifestyle content

When your links are shared externally, Google sees activity around your blog. These signals can help speed up crawling and indexing. Plus, you’ll get extra traffic from social media itself!

5. Submit Your Sitemap

Your sitemap is basically a map that tells Google, “Hey, here are all the pages on my blog.” Without it, Google may miss some of your posts.

For Blogger users, make sure you’ve submitted these to Google Search Console:

Once submitted, Google will periodically check these files for new content and index them automatically over time.

6. Be Consistent and Patient

Here’s the truth: indexing doesn’t happen overnight. Even if you follow all the steps above, it may take weeks or months before all your content shows up in search results.

The key is consistency. Publish regularly, optimize each post, and promote it. Over time, Google will recognize your blog as active and valuable, and indexing will improve naturally.

7. Bonus Tips to Boost Indexing

Here are a few extra tricks many bloggers overlook:

  • Fix broken links – Too many dead links can make your blog look neglected. Use tools like Broken Link Checker to clean them up.
  • Avoid duplicate content – Don’t copy-paste from other sites (or even your own posts). Google dislikes repetition.
  • Enable HTTPS – A secure blog (with the padlock symbol) signals trust to both Google and readers.
  • Engage readers – Comments and shares send positive signals that your blog is alive and helpful.

Square UP

Improving indexing is part art, part patience. You can’t force Google to crawl everything instantly, but you can make your blog more attractive and easier to discover.

Focus on creating valuable content, connecting your posts, promoting them, and keeping your site clean and secure. Do this consistently, and you’ll notice more and more of your pages being indexed and more traffic rolling in.

So, keep writing, keep optimizing, and let Google do the rest!
