Kang Guru Magazine is one of many English resources that we can use it in both classroom activity and as an information media. Here are two segments I like most available in the Kang Guru Magazine, they are Australia Indonesia Partnership and Listeners' Letters(Kang Guru Voices.)

Just like as many others listener, I like Australia and Indonesia Partnership segment sponsored by AusAID, it has attracted many readers and listeners successfully because of its programs to help the education and social life in Indonesia. By working together with the government of Indonesia, AusAID has provided many supports and contributions, such as the construction and expansion of around 2000 junior high schools (Kang Guru March 2007 edition) and Central Java Community Assistance Program (CAP) by The AusAID Yogyakarta - this program was an Australian Government initiative which was designed in response to the earthquake which struck Yogyakarta and part of Central Java Province on 27th may 2006(Kang Guru December 2007 edition) and many others. These partnership programs are really meaningful and truthful, I think everyone has the same opinion as me - Good Neighbors Make Good Friends.

The second segment I like most available in Kang Guru Magazine is Listeners letters or Kang Guru Voices. There are so many letters, email and SMS on this segment that we could read and study especially their ideas or their writing skills. So many parts of profession come to join this segment (students, teachers and public listeners), they share any ideas and great interesting information about English. Diah Wahyu Dinata was one of great students who sent her letter to KGI in March 2008 edition. She could be an good inspiration for us as an English teacher to motivate our students to write English and achieve their dreams.

A phrasal verb consists of a verb and a preposition or adverb that modifies or changes the meaning; 'give up' is a phrasal verb that means 'stop doing' something, which is very different from 'give'. The word or words that modify a verb in this manner can also go under the name particle.

Phrasal verbs can be divided into groups:

Intransitive verbs
These don't take an object
They had an argument, but they've made up now.

Inseparable verbs
The object must come after the particle.
They are looking after their grandchildren.

Separable verbs
With some separable verbs, the object must come between the verb and the particle:
The quality of their work sets them apart from their rivals.

In our phrasal verb dictionary, we classify these as Separable [obligatory] With some separable verbs, the object can before or after the particle, though when a pronoun is used it comes before the particle:
Turn the TV off.
Turn off the TV.
Turn it off.

Definition:
A complex verb made up of a verb (usually one of action or movement) and an adverbial particle (of direction or location). See also: prepositional verb.
Etymology:
According to Logan Pearsall Smith in Words and Idioms (1925), the term was introduced by Henry Bradley, senior editor of the Oxford English Dictionary.

Examples and Observations:

* "Put out the light, and then put out the light."
(William Shakespeare, Othello)

* "a wind has blown the rain away and blown
the sky away and all the leaves away,
and the trees stand."
(E.E. Cummings, "A Wind Has Blown the Rain Away and Blown")

* "Like compounds, phrasal verbs have semantic coherence, evidenced by the fact that they are sometimes replaceable by single Latinate verbs, as in the following:
o break out -- erupt, escape
o count out -- exclude
o think up -- imagine
o take off -- depart, remove
o work out -- solve
o put off -- delay
o egg on -- incite
o put out -- extinguish
o put off -- postpone
Furthermore, the meaning of the combination of verb and particle in the phrasal verb may be opaque, that is, not predictable from the meaning of the parts."
(Laurel J. Brinton, The Structure of Modern English: A Linguistic Introduction, John Benjamins Publishing Company, 2000)

* "A phrasal verb differs from a sequence of a verb and a preposition (a prepositional verb) in [these] respects. Here call up is a phrasal verb, while call on is only a verb plus a preposition:
1. The particle in a phrasal verb is stressed: They called up the teacher, but not *They called on the teacher.
2. The particle of a phrasal verb can be moved to the end: They called the teacher up, but not *They called the teacher on.
3. The simple verb of a phrasal verb may not be separated from its particle by an adverb: *They called early up the teacher is no good, but They called early on the teacher is fine."
(R.L. Trask, Dictionary of English Grammar, Penguin, 2000)

Also Known As: compound verb, verb phrase, verb-adverb combination, verb-particle combination, two-part verb, three-part verb

How many English words can I learn per day?

10 English words or phrases per day aren’t too many, are they? Just give it a try. You will find that you can learn them in next to no time.

So why not take a little time each day (Monday to Friday) to learn 10 new words?

Use the weekend to revise what you have learned during the past week(s). This way you’ll enrich your English vocabulary by 50 new words per week. (That’s 200 new English words after a month!)

Vocabulary needs to be revised again and again. Well, what could be better than studying vocabulary by listening to your favorite songs?

Read the lyrics first and try to understand them. You don’t have to translate the lyrics word by word, just try to find out what the song is all about. (Note: ‘Rap’ might not be practical as those songs usually contain slang words that not even ‘ordinary’ English native speakers know.)

Pick some words or phrases from the song that you would like to learn. If necessary, look up their exact meaning in a dictionary. A dictionary might also be useful to find other interesting phrases with the word.

Now, to learn the vocabulary, all you have to do is listening to the song again and again (that shouldn’t be a problem if it’s one of your favourite songs).

Let the music turn you on.

Isn’t it frustrating: it is always the same mistakes that prevent you from getting that better mark in your English tests. How can you unlearn those mistakes? Don’t try too much at a time. Instead, concentrate on just one typical mistake. Go through the explanations and exercises in your grammar reference or textbook. When reading English texts, look out for that specific grammar aspect.

Our backlog analysis contains 26 typical problems. We show you where on ego4u you'll find relevant explanations, exercises and tips. Take the print out of our analysis and your last English test and consult your English teacher. Look through the test together and pick out one problem. Write down the category … and start unlearning that problem.

If you’ve unlearned the mistake by the next test, you can tackle the next problem.
What’s the problem?
What’s the problem?

There are lost of problem when learning English as foreign or second language. Here are some list of English language problems that might be arising when you are dealing with the language. Some students find it hard to cover all these sort of problems while others don't feel the same way.

1. Singular and Plural Form of Nouns
2. Article
3. Pronouns
4. some/any and much/many
5. Cardinal and Ordinal Numbers
6. Date and Time
7. Prepositions

“Boring!” Well, that’s definitely not the way it works.

Try to find a positive aspect to studying. Why not watch your favourite film in English and write down some useful words or phrases that you want to remember. You could also read the lyrics of Top 10 songs and try to understand what they are about. Or check out celebrity sites and learn more about famous actors, bands and other stars. This sure is good for your vocabulary and on top of that – it’s lots of fun.

Always look on the bright side of life.

Listen to the news or other programs in English
By listening to the news in English on the radio we not only get a lot of information but it's also a great way to hear the correct pronunciation and intonation patterns of the announcers. Listening to the radio can be difficult, but don't give up too easily. ‘Get into the Habit’ and keep listening regularly, especially to Kang Guru!

Read articles or books in English
If you choose this study tip, remember to choose an interesting topic! It's much harder to read something that doesn't interest you. Choosing a story or article about something you enjoy will make your reading more worthwhile, more fun and more effective.

Increase your vocabulary
You can do this by checking new words in a dictionary and writing them down with their meanings or in an example sentence. But don't just write them down and forget about them! Study Tips from Internet Surfers

Today we're going to hear some very useful study tips from one of our KGRE fans, Naomi Slowna. Naomi is from Pematangsiantar in North Sumatera, but she moved to Bogor to study and graduated from the Bogor Institute of Agriculture. She enjoys learning English and likes to use it when communicating with people all over the world. Here's Naomi to pass on some of her English study tips. Listen carefully, what are the two ways Naomi improves her English?

‘I had English lessons regularly at school. Many of my friends also took English courses after school hours. So at first they had better English than me. I never took an English course but I used my time effectively and studied English all the time. But actually, the most powerful reason for me to learn English is my hobby — music. I have loved music since I was 5 years old, especially English language songs. But I didn't have much money to buy all the cassettes that I wanted. Even now when I like a song I always need to know the lyrics.

So I listen to the song on the radio carefully and try to write down the lyrics according to what I hear. Sometimes the lyrics of songs can't be heard clearly, especially if there are slang words. Nevertheless I can still learn a lot about vocabulary. You can do the same too. Now, my hobby is watching movies. This helps me a lot to increase my English skills.

Now my English proficiency is far better than before and it is the result of all the time I spent listening, writing and learning. I still write down songs lyrics that I like and as many as I can. I believe our hobbies can be very useful to help us study English. If you have a hobby then use it to study English, okay?’ Naomi uses songs and films to learn English, and what a great idea that is.

Learning local culture is crucial. Although we live in modern the era, learning local culture is still needed especially for Indonesia teenagers. There are reasons for this. First, learning local culture can enrich national culture. National cultures are derived from many local cultures.

If teenagers know their culture, for instance for me, the 'Ngremo Dance' and they practice it, they will keep the cultures alive. So everybody knows that 'Ngremo dance' is one part of local culture. 'Ngremo Dance' can also be added on the list of national culture. Secondly learning about local culture can enhance our knowledge about all culture. We should acquire many knowledges not only about the latest technologies but also about culture. We are lucky if we have many knowledges. The knowledges, especially important issue, like culture is one big power to face this world.

Furthermore, learning local culture can protect our culture from bad influences of Western culture. As an English proverb says “Every medal has two sides”, Western culture has good influences and also the bad ones. Most of the Indonesia teenagers like to imitate western culture. It’s good when they imitate the good ones, but if they imitate the bad ones, they will lose their personality as Indonesians. They use some western culture to get acknowledgments as modern people.

So, it’s important to learn local culture for the better life. The teenagers who have learnt the local culture can filter the western culture which is suitable for the growth of Indonesia culture/ And in turn, Indonesia teenagers will love their own cultures and respect other nations cultures.

As we know, now a days many people forgot their local culture. Many of them said that the local culture is very boring. They prefer to modern dance or playing games. And now, it’s very important to learn about the local culture, we as society especially as a student, must think what will happen with our country if we can’t protect our local culture?

In Sibolga, many programs has been try to protect the local culture. Every school showed many kinds of performances, like Tor-tor dance, melayu dance, or Minang dance. And it’s one ways to make local culture to be popular.

Many information we can get if we fight to find it. Because, it is very easy to get. We can find in some books, magazines, or internet who explain about culture. So, let’s start now! We must make our culture to be popular. And we as a students, can join with the government to protect the local culture.

The Solar Energy Saver For House wifes

The solar energy is a long life energy. It never runs out. Although it’s very hot, but by its heat, help people to dry fishes (in coastal area) and dry clothes. Even now days, solar energy also used to operate a car. It uses the solar energy as the basic power, not petrol. The solar energy saver here seems like the one that the cars have. The different is the solar energy saver reduces the housewives headache. How can it be? Because the government will increase the price of electricity. It makes “Mom” getting more headache. After the impact of the petrol price which increased, now Mom have to thing for the increase of electricity prices.

The solar energy saver itself, placed on the house to reduce the uses of electricity. It puts on the roof. The shape is like parabola which consist of some element that lock the solar energy. After the solar energy is full, it will transform the lamps and some households. Another uses of solar energy saver is replacing the LPG or land oil (oil which use in kompor). It has already proved. Solar is needed. By using some elements to collect the solar heat and then transform it to the pan.

So, solar energy has many functions. Although it’s sometimes very hot but useful for human. Imagine if the solar lazy to go out, we can not dry clothes, fishes, and the important is this kind of new technology will never run. It will useless without solar. Because it’s solar every saver. If it not built today, maybe 10 or 15 years later, it will be a famous equipment.

Modern technology

Talking about modern technology can make me laugh at my self. Why? Because I was once shocked by the new technology. I remember when I was a teenager, I was asked by my neighbor who was also my English teacher at school, to go to a public telephone, to call one of her friends to come to her house. My goodness, I talked to my self, how I could do this, I’d never made a phone call before.

My heart palpitated strongly at that time. Yeah, since my family was too poor to set a phone, I didn’t know how to use it. I was confused, I was shy to tell the truth to my teacher about the fact. But then, I thanked God. My teacher canceled her order. That’s about the past, when the telephone appeared as a new expensive technology after radio and television, as I knew.

Nowadays, I am not shocked anymore by the new technology, although I still don’t have enough money to buy them all. I am amazed that the technology develops so fast. We can see on the television the appearance of the new products of modern technology. They are all very fantastic and amazing. And for me, the most wonderful and exciting piece of modern technology is the internet, because with the internet, we can find many new things that we don’t know before. We can also chat with other people all around the world and even look for or apply for a jib through the internet.
